A variety of ecological materials and practices are used in the creation of the CT, including a painting process specifically designed to reduce environmental impact, speakers manufactured with sustainable bamboo, and carpeting and components in the cargo area composed of 30% plant-based sources. And, because more than 85% of the vehicle can ultimately be recycled, its design won't only influence the vehicles of the future. It will also help build them.
The available voice-activated HDD Navigation System on the CT uses a hard disk drive (HDD) to store maps and data, which allows it to operate much faster than previous DVD-based models. Additionally, it can recognize over 100 voice commands; provides a sharper, more colorful picture on an 8-inch LCD screen that retracts from the center console; can map over eight million points of interest; and display information in English, French and Spanish.


It’s a fairly straightforward principle—going farther, faster and more efficiently becomes possible when you have power sources working in tandem. That’s how the Lexus Hybrid Drive System works. A gasoline engine is paired with a high-output electric motor. Then, this intelligent system continuously optimizes gas and electric power to help deliver performance and fuel efficiency at any speed, through any condition, in any circumstance.

To provide the highest combined fuel-efficiency rating of any luxury vehicle, the CT features numerous innovations. Among them: a unique Exhaust Gas Recirculation system that captures, cools and repurposes exhaust gasses in the combustion process; air conditioning and heating systems that can be used without the engine running; an Exhaust Heat-Recovery system that reduces engine warm-up time, allowing it to disengage earlier, more often and for longer periods—accounting for as much as a 7% increase in efficiency at low temperatures; and, as a benefit of its full-hybrid design, the ability to drive at low speeds on electric power alone for short distances.

  • Whether it’s the creation of eco-advanced materials for our hybrids, the manufacturing plant, the hybrids themselves or their afterlife, we are always looking for ways to reduce waste and improve efficiencies.

  • Recyclable Plastics:
    Developed by our engineers, TSOP (Toyota Super Olefin Polymer) is a type of plastic that doesn’t deteriorate. It’s recyclable rather than being discarded as waste after a single use, and is used in many places such as bumpers, interior panels, trim and parts of the dash and console. It is such a significant breakthrough, we’ve made the formula available to every other car manufacturer.
  • Sustainable Material:
    Kenaf, a highly sustainable grass plant similar to bamboo, produces three harvestable crops per season and, as it grows, absorbs significantly more CO2 than timber. Once bonded with nonpetroleum glue, it is formed into compressed panels and can be used inside doors and other areas. Castor, another natural plant, is used in the construction of seat cushions and seatbacks of the HS.
  • Steel & Aluminum Reclamation:
    Lexus manufacturing sites have an underground conveyor-belt system that captures excess bits and scraps of steel and aluminum. Ultimately, these scraps are shipped back to the vendor to be melted down for reuse.
  • Recycled Content:
    When seat cushions, floor mats and roof liners are manufactured, the leftover bits and trimmings are not discarded. Instead, they are recycled and repurposed as sound insulation in the doors, roof, floors and chassis. This way, nothing goes to waste.
  • Specialized Incenerators:
    Even with strict efficiency measures in place, a small portion of material waste is inevitable. For this purpose, a specialized incinerator with 85% thermal efficiency is used to burn the waste, generating electricity and steam that is redirected back into the manufacturing process.
  • Low VOCs:
    Lexus helped develop a water-based paint used for undercoating and modified the painting process to shorten the drying time. The result: Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions are reduced by nearly 70% compared to solvent-based undercoats, and CO 2 emissions are reduced by nearly 15%.
  • Low Emissions:
    Having met or surpassed the stringent emission requirements, every Lexus Hybrid has been certified as a Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV II) by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
  • Fuel Efficiency:
    On the road, the Lexus Hybrids themselves help make less of an impact on the environment with better fuel efficiency. One of the main reasons for this innovation is the Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) systems on the Lexus Hybrids’ combustion engines. This intelligent system emits fewer emissions and provides greater efficiency by ensuring the least amount of fuel is used at all times.
  • Battery Recycling:
    The powerful batteries in a Lexus Hybrid are designed to last for the life of the vehicle. However, in the case of an accident or if the system ceases to function for some reason, Lexus reclaims the battery so it can be recycled or stored on-site in an environmentally sensitive way.
  • Zero LandFill Status:
    Every Lexus manufacturing site has Zero-landfill Status, meaning that any waste resulting from manufacture is recycled, repurposed or used to generate additional energy. Nothing is ever taken to a landfill.
