-To assist you with parking and when negotiating narrow passes, an available Wide-view Side Monitor  camera built into the passenger-side mirror can display an overhead view to the right of the RX 450h at slow speeds or when in reverse.

Voice-Activated HDD Navigation System
The available voice-activated Hard Disk Drive (HDD) Navigation System  on the RX 450h utilizes a higher resolution eight-inch LCD placed closer to eye level to help you remain focused on the road. A more intuitive interface was also developed to display a linear progression of your commands as you use different functions within the system. Featuring voice command technology, you can search for destinations using your regular speaking voice and more natural phrasing. "Show me Chinese restaurants," from the destination menu, for example, will display locations in your immediate vicinity. And once a destination is selected, the system will calculate up to three different routes and provide audible and visual directions as you drive.

The system also features XM NavTraffic® , which can provide real-time traffic reports on specific highways or routes and reroute you around congestion. And, for the first time on a utility vehicle, XM NavWeather™ , which can provide real-time weather reports for specific cities and even automatically alert you of severe weather. A complimentary 90-day trial subscription to XM services is included.

ECO Mode
An ECO mode system monitors and modifies multiple systems to consume less energy.
To encourage a more efficient driving style, the RX 450h features an ECO mode that modifies the air conditioning's load on the engine and regulates the throttle response for more efficient acceleration. Under certain conditions, the RX 450h can be operated in EV mode where it can function on battery power alone—a particularly useful feature when driving in residential areas at night and in enclosed areas like parking garages.

Hybrid Powertrain
A completely redesigned gasoline engine and efficiency systems deliver nearly 10% more power while providing greater fuel economy.

The 2011 RX 450h features a 3.5-liter V6 Atkinson cycle engine that works differently than conventional engines to convert more of the energy generated during combustion into mechanical energy. It also features a hybrid battery that is lighter and more compact than that found in the previous-generation RX Hybrid. As a result of these advancements, the RX 450h produces a combined 295 horsepower , and provides instantaneous torque when you need it most.

Of course, performance wasn’t the only area that was enhanced. Innovative systems have also been included, contributing to an overall increase in efficiency and a fuel economy rating that surpasses that of an average four-cylinder midsize sedan. One of these systems is an Exhaust Heat-Recovery system that captures a portion of the exhaust gasses generated during startup and uses them to help warm the gasoline engine. On cold days, this can significantly reduce the time it takes for the RX 450h to reach a point where it can shut off the gasoline engine and function on battery power alone, by up to 15 minutes in some cases.

Speed-Sensing Electronic Power Steering with Steering Torque Assist
Electronic Power Steering offers greater fuel efficiency and optimized steering feel while steering torque assist helps drivers when braking on split surfaces.
A progressive power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering system on the RX 450h senses the vehicle speed and automatically delivers the appropriate level of steering assistance. The result is greater fuel efficiency and steering feel.

The RX 450h also features a steering torque assist system that can sense and respond when the vehicle is braking on a road with different levels of friction. For example, when braking with the left wheels on asphalt and the right wheels on snow, vehicles tend to deflect toward the higher-friction side due to the difference between the braking forces. By adding steering torque to balance the difference, vehicle control is enhanced.

The cleaner Lexus Hybrid Drive allows the RX 450h to meet some of the most stringent global emissions directives, including California's strict SULEV requirements

The Power of Responsibility

  • Whether it’s the creation of eco-advanced materials for our hybrids, the manufacturing plant, the hybrids themselves or their afterlife, we are always looking for ways to reduce waste and improve efficiencies.

  • Recyclable Plastics:
Developed by our engineers, TSOP (Toyota Super Olefin Polymer) is a type of plastic that doesn’t deteriorate. It’s recyclable rather than being discarded as waste after a single use, and is used in many places such as bumpers, interior panels, trim and parts of the dash and console. It is such a significant breakthrough, we’ve made the formula available to every other car manufacturer.
  • Sustainable Material:
Kenaf, a highly sustainable grass plant similar to bamboo, produces three harvestable crops per season and, as it grows, absorbs significantly more CO2 than timber. Once bonded with nonpetroleum glue, it is formed into compressed panels and can be used inside doors and other areas. Castor, another natural plant, is used in the construction of seat cushions and seatbacks of the HS.
  • Steel & Aluminum Reclamation:
Lexus manufacturing sites have an underground conveyor-belt system that captures excess bits and scraps of steel and aluminum. Ultimately, these scraps are shipped back to the vendor to be melted down for reuse.
  • Recycled Content:
When seat cushions, floor mats and roof liners are manufactured, the leftover bits and trimmings are not discarded. Instead, they are recycled and repurposed as sound insulation in the doors, roof, floors and chassis. This way, nothing goes to waste.
  • Specialized Incenerators:
Even with strict efficiency measures in place, a small portion of material waste is inevitable. For this purpose, a specialized incinerator with 85% thermal efficiency is used to burn the waste, generating electricity and steam that is redirected back into the manufacturing process.
  • Low VOCs:
Lexus helped develop a water-based paint used for undercoating and modified the painting process to shorten the drying time. The result: Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions are reduced by nearly 70% compared to solvent-based undercoats, and CO 2 emissions are reduced by nearly 15%.
  • Low Emissions:
Having met or surpassed the stringent emission requirements, every Lexus Hybrid has been certified as a Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV II) by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
  • Fuel Efficiency:
On the road, the Lexus Hybrids themselves help make less of an impact on the environment with better fuel efficiency. One of the main reasons for this innovation is the Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) systems on the Lexus Hybrids’ combustion engines. This intelligent system emits fewer emissions and provides greater efficiency by ensuring the least amount of fuel is used at all times.
  • Battery Recycling:
The powerful batteries in a Lexus Hybrid are designed to last for the life of the vehicle. However, in the case of an accident or if the system ceases to function for some reason, Lexus reclaims the battery so it can be recycled or stored on-site in an environmentally sensitive way.
  • Zero LandFill Status:
Every Lexus manufacturing site has Zero-landfill Status, meaning that any waste resulting from manufacture is recycled, repurposed or used to generate additional energy. Nothing is ever taken to a landfill.
