The exterior

The BMW ActiveHybride X6 combines the sporting appearance of a Sports Activity Coupé with distinctive and aerodynamic finesse. Exclusive BMW ActiveHybrid characteristics include model logos on the front doors and boot as well as the 20-inch Aero wheels Streamline. When seen from the front and rear, the horizontal lines and prominent wheel arches emphasise the vehicle's power, breadth and presence. The side view shows the elegant coupé proportions while the roofline flows down to the rear end cutoff in a gentle curve. Two character lines underscore the dynamic wedge shape.






The interior

The BMW ActiveHybride X6 accentuates an active lifestyle, with functional detail solutions crafted to the very highest standards. A wide choice of materials, such as the exclusive Leather Nappa Ivory White with blue stitching, interior trims with brushed Aluminium and entry sills with model logo, offers a broad range of high-quality combinations. The leather on the exclusive optional leather cladding for the dashboard and door panels even has special padding for enhanced haptic quality.





The electric motors

Concealed in the Two-Mode Active Transmission to save space, the two electric motors deliver outstanding efficiency. It is their role to provide high torque from stationary for silent propulsion even at low revs or for additional acceleration. As generators, they convert movement into electrical energy to either increase power or charge the high-performance battery. This stored energy can be converted to sheer driving pleasure whenever required.

Save intelligently, store intelligently: the electric core of the BMW ActiveHybride X6  is a long-life high-performance battery with nickel-metal hydride technology and a capacity of 2.4 kWh. A sophisticated cooling system, that selects the optimum cooling strategy for every climate and driving situation, ensures highest level efficiency alongside the reliable storage and immediate availability of energy. The integrated control unit constantly calculates current battery and power levels. This is stored driving pleasure that can be activated at any time to provide fully electric driving, a quick acceleration boost or active support for the BMW TwinPower Turbo V8.


BMW ActiveHybrid

BMW ActiveHybrid technology intelligently manages vehicle energy. Hybrid technology is implemented to increase both efficiency and dynamics in all driving situations and for all models.

By implementing BMW EfficientDynamics technologies, combustion engines have never been so economical. However, this doesn't mean we are now going to rest on our laurels - BMW ActiveHybrid technology is the next step that will continue to sink consumption and fuel levels even further in the medium term while maintaining the high levels of performance associated with BMW.
The BMW Concept ActiveHybrid impressively demonstrates how technology, design and driving features can all successfully work together. A key component in achieving both impressive efficiency and driving pleasure in BMW vehicles with ActiveHybrid is the two-mode active transmission which links the combustion engine with two high-performance electric motors.
Developed as part of the Global Hybrid Cooperation, the two-mode active transmission uses planetary gear sets to variably split the power between the different units. The system switches between two operating modes according to need: one is used for moving off at high torque and low speed, the other for faster travelling speeds.
This ensures that power is optimally exploited depending on the particular driving situation. Fixed-ratio gears within the two operating modes furnish additional

benefits, boosting efficiency and driving dynamics across the entire speed range. Here the two electric motors can be used both during acceleration and for the recovery of brake energy. This energy, which is subsequently on tap to drive the vehicle, is provided practically free of charge.
Thus the BMW Concept ActiveHybrid always has the best of both worlds: it can be driven either in full electric mode, solely on power from the combustion engine, or in a combination of both drive sources. The only surprise is the fuel consumption and emission figures - which shave off up to 20 percent compared to a similar vehicle with conventional drive.


Brake Energy Regeneration

Until now, taking your foot off the accelerator meant that energy was going unused. However, thanks to BMW's Brake Energy Regeneration, this is no longer the case. The BMW ActiveHybrid X6 transforms the vehicle's kinetic energy into electricity. The two electric motors charge the high-voltage battery up to 120 kW (162 hp) and slow down the BMW ActiveHybrid by up to 0.3 g – the additional disc brakes only have to intervene during particularly heavy braking.

Make use of every Watt: by charging the battery only when your BMW is braking, coasting or decelerating, Brake Energy Regeneration improves fuel efficiency by up to three percent and ensures that the full power of your engine is available for acceleration.

Today's vehicles require much more electrical energy than older models, due to the much wider array of electric and electronic on-board comfort and safety systems. This energy is created by the generator (also known as the alternator) which converts the engine's power output into electricity. In conventional systems, the generator is permanently driven by a belt connected to the engine.
BMW's Brake Energy Regeneration operates differently: the generator is activated only when you take your foot from the accelerator or apply the brake. The kinetic energy that would otherwise go to waste is now used efficiently, converted into electricity by the generator and stored in the battery.
Producing electricity in this highly efficient way delivers an additional advantage: when you apply the accelerator, the generator is deactivated - so the full power of the engine can be directed to the drive wheels. Brake Energy Regeneration thus increases fuel efficiency while simultaneously enhancing driving dynamics. As a safety precaution, the Brake Energy Regeneration system monitors the level of battery charge and will, if necessary, continue to charge the battery even during acceleration to prevent a complete discharging of the battery.

Recycling

Even at the earliest stages of vehicle development and production, BMW considers what will happen at the end of the vehicle's service life, laying the foundations for environmentally-friendly recycling of the materials used in the vehicle. BMW ensures that wherever possible, different materials can be easily separated for efficient recycling. Right from the start, every BMW is built for minimal environmental impact.

BMW follows a philosophy of minimising negative effects on the environment through intelligent technological solutions. This extends from the earliest phases of product development to the final reprocessing and reuse of materials at the end of the vehicle's service life.
During the development of new vehicles, BMW engineers ensure that each component is designed for maximum environmental-friendliness and sustainability. Raw materials and energy are used as efficiently as possible, and waste is kept to an absolute minimum. Following the "design for recycling" principle, designers give preference to materials that can be produced cleanly and efficiently, and that can later be reused and recycled.
Recycling vehicles at the end of their service life is most efficient when components and materials can be separated and reused directly. For example, some components can be reused for their original purpose in a different vehicle: engines, transmission systems and other large components can be reconditioned and made available as spares.

This is known as "high-value recycling". By contrast, "material recycling" separates different types of materials - glass, polycarbonates or aluminium for example - and processes these to form the raw recycled material; this can be used as sources of energy or in manufacturing new products. For example, the inner wheel housing of new vehicles is comprised of recycled synthetics.
