INTERIOR

From the very start, the design of the HS Hybrid is conscious of its end. Wherever possible, we used materials that are more sustainable to produce and emit less harmful pollutants when their usefulness comes to an end. Whether castor oil used in the seat cushions or kenaf fibers used behind the seats, we considered the environmental impact before, during and after the vehicle's lifespan.

The available voice-activated HDD Navigation System uses a hard disk drive (HDD) to store maps and data, which allows it to operate much faster than previous DVD-based models. Additionally, it can recognize over 100 voice commands; provides a sharper, more colorful display; can map over eight million points of interest and display information in English, French and Spanish.

 

EFFICIENCY
 

Equipped with a 2.4-liter Atkinson cycle powerplant, the engine generates 187 total system horsepower. The highly efficient Atkinson cycle engine, made possible by the Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) system, allows the expansion/power stroke to be significantly longer than the compression stroke so that combustion energy can produce engine power more efficiently.

Performance is further enhanced by the Electronically controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (ECVT). Unlike typical automatic transmissions that have a fixed number of gear combinations, the hybrid's ECVT allows for virtually unlimited combinations, maximizing the powertrain's efficiency and allowing the driver to enjoy a smoother acceleration that can't be experienced with conventional transmissions.

To make efficient driving easier, a hybrid power meter shows instantaneous EcoDriving status, while a green ECO indicator light rewards you when you are driving efficiently.
 

In addition to improving fuel consumption compared to conventional hydraulic power assist systems, Electric Power Steering (EPS) improves responsiveness and feel, while the electric motor's cooling oil pump only operates when needed at high temperatures. The air conditioning compressor is also electric instead of driven from the gasoline engine.
 

Exhaust Heat-Recovery System

The Exhaust Heat-Recovery System further enhances fuel efficiency during winter months by enabling a faster engine warm-up time and also helps the car's heater warm up more quickly.


Regenerative Braking

During braking, coasting and deceleration, energy that would normally be lost as heat is captured as electrical energy, which is then used to recharge the battery.

  • Whether it’s the creation of eco-advanced materials for our hybrids, the manufacturing plant, the hybrids themselves or their afterlife, we are always looking for ways to reduce waste and improve efficiencies.
     
  • Recyclable Plastics:
    Developed by our engineers, TSOP (Toyota Super Olefin Polymer) is a type of plastic that doesn’t deteriorate. It’s recyclable rather than being discarded as waste after a single use, and is used in many places such as bumpers, interior panels, trim and parts of the dash and console. It is such a significant breakthrough, we’ve made the formula available to every other car manufacturer.
     
  • Sustainable Material:
    Kenaf, a highly sustainable grass plant similar to bamboo, produces three harvestable crops per season and, as it grows, absorbs significantly more CO2 than timber. Once bonded with nonpetroleum glue, it is formed into compressed panels and can be used inside doors and other areas. Castor, another natural plant, is used in the construction of seat cushions and seatbacks of the HS.
     
  • Steel & Aluminum Reclamation:
    Lexus manufacturing sites have an underground conveyor-belt system that captures excess bits and scraps of steel and aluminum. Ultimately, these scraps are shipped back to the vendor to be melted down for reuse.
     
  • Recycled Content:
    When seat cushions, floor mats and roof liners are manufactured, the leftover bits and trimmings are not discarded. Instead, they are recycled and repurposed as sound insulation in the doors, roof, floors and chassis. This way, nothing goes to waste.
     
  • Specialized Incenerators:
    Even with strict efficiency measures in place, a small portion of material waste is inevitable. For this purpose, a specialized incinerator with 85% thermal efficiency is used to burn the waste, generating electricity and steam that is redirected back into the manufacturing process.
     
  • Low VOCs:
    Lexus helped develop a water-based paint used for undercoating and modified the painting process to shorten the drying time. The result: Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) emissions are reduced by nearly 70% compared to solvent-based undercoats, and CO 2 emissions are reduced by nearly 15%.
     
  • Low Emissions:
    Having met or surpassed the stringent emission requirements, every Lexus Hybrid has been certified as a Super Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle (SULEV II) by the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
     
  • Fuel Efficiency:
    On the road, the Lexus Hybrids themselves help make less of an impact on the environment with better fuel efficiency. One of the main reasons for this innovation is the Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) systems on the Lexus Hybrids’ combustion engines. This intelligent system emits fewer emissions and provides greater efficiency by ensuring the least amount of fuel is used at all times.
     
  • Battery Recycling:
    The powerful batteries in a Lexus Hybrid are designed to last for the life of the vehicle. However, in the case of an accident or if the system ceases to function for some reason, Lexus reclaims the battery so it can be recycled or stored on-site in an environmentally sensitive way.
     
  • Zero LandFill Status:
    Every Lexus manufacturing site has Zero-landfill Status, meaning that any waste resulting from manufacture is recycled, repurposed or used to generate additional energy. Nothing is ever taken to a landfill.
